Rolling Power Outages, Freeway Overpasses Closed, Even Colder Temps Coming
A crippling winter storm continues to ravage the region. Overnight, ice and snow accumulated on roadways. All major freeway overpasses closed. Both airports remain closed until further notice. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has started rolling blackouts lasting 15-45 minutes.
And although precipitation has pushed off to the east as of 8 am, temperatures will plummet even more tonight.
The National Weather Service now predicts a low of eleven degrees for Houston tonight. Television weather services are predicting five degrees. If we reach that, it would be the coldest temperature ever recorded in Houston.
Freezing rain, sleet, and snow accumulated on all surfaces overnight. Although precipitation will soon end, ice and slush cover nearly all roadways.
A bitter cold air mass worked into the area overnight. Temperatures fell in the teens for most areas north of I-10 and low to mid 20’s south of I-10. Wind chills have fallen below zero across the northern areas and 5-10 for most of the rest of the region.
Accumulations across the area will remain all day and travel will continue to be nearly impossible.
Stay home. Stay safe.
